From Krupanidhi Junction, they should turn left and move towards Koramangala water tank junction.

From Koramangala water tank junction vehicles going towards City Market, Majestic, Adugodi and Shivajinagar proceed further via Madivala check post. Vehicles going towards Koramangala, BDA Complex, Canara Bank, Koramangala, 80 Feet Road and Neelasandra turn left at Koramangala water tank junction for proceeding further.

Traffic woes in HSR Layout seem to be unending

19 May

With the BDA constructing another flyover in the area, harassed residents will have to bear the brunt of traffic diversions yet again. With the completion of Agara flyover, residents of HSR Layout Sectors 2, 3 and 4 could have heaved a sigh of relief. But with the new flyover project, problems are back to square one. The new flyover work which has started on 14th Main is directly affecting residents of Sectors 6 and 7.

Brigadier R S Murthy, president of HSR Layout Sector-2 RWA, said in the last 3-4 years, people of this area have been subjected to tremendous hardships, thanks to flyover work. “During 2007-08, it was bridge work at 14th Main and the Ring Road junction. The work lingered on for over 15 months. During this time, all entry points to HSR Layout except for one or two were closed from the Ring Road side.”

In 2009-10, traffic from Sarjapur and Ring Road was diverted to HSR Layout, again because of the Agara Circle flyover. “Why didn’t city planners think of building the new flyover two years ago when bridge construction was on at the same place? We fear this time too incoming traffic from Madivala side will be diverted to HSR Layout,” Murthy said.

The 525-metre Agara flyover connects Sarjapur Road to Silk Board junction. “Work here will be over by July 1,” said a BDA official. With the completion of Agara flyover, residents of HSR Layout Sectors 2, 3 and 4 could have heaved a sigh of relief.  The Iblur and Agara flyovers built at Rs 93 crore connect commuters from Bellandur to Agara.

“It appears that we are being taken for granted. Traffic diversion to a residential area has created so much of chaos,” said R S Hiremath, vicepresident of HSR Layout residents’ welfare association (RWA).

Improving junctions to make the traffic flow easier and faster

16 Apr

The traffic police have been improving junctions in the city to make the traffic flow easier and faster through busy intersections. Incidentally, nowhere in the world does a traffic police department work on junction improvement projects other than here in Bangalore.

“There are two factors that determine the speed of traffic. One is the capacity of the road and the other is the capacity of the junction. A wide road is of no use if there is a narrow junction creating a bottleneck. Also, a wide junction will be of no use if the road leading to it is narrow. Now, while we cannot have flyovers everywhere, the alternative is to improve junctions. The entire traffic pattern changed on Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road after a junction improvement there. The islands created there have speeded up the traffic considerably. Also, islands add beauty to a spot. We have ensured that not a single tree is cut to create an island”, says Praveen Sood, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

Explaining the concept of junction improvement, he demonstrates how it helps make the traffic flow smooth. The Nanjappa Road junction near the hockey stadium is an example. “Bellshaped corners helps the traffic glide and merge with the flow on the next road. It is a lot easier to negotiate a bell-shaped corner than a sharp one”, he says. Another option used by the traffic police is flaring. Here, the road near the junction is broadened.

Another concept is the creation of traffic islands to direct motorists into a lane. “When you have a wide junction, you need to channelise traffic, or else there will be chaos as no one will follow lanes. Therefore, we have created islands to channelise traffic, especially when there is a free left, or free right from a one-way road. These islands also serve as a refuge for pedestrians”,  Praveen elaborates. The islands near Chalukya Hotel – Basaveshwara Circle and next to Race Club are examples of this concept.

This year, as many as 50 junctions across the city, including some in residential areas, are going to be improved by the traffic police.
