Broken road creates inconvenience for many

If you walk from Sarjapur Outer ring road junction towards Suncity Apartments, you will notice a patch of road broken on the right side. As you move ahead, you will notice another patch in a good condition and then again a small patch is broken.
Towards the end of the road, auto drivers park autos where the patch of road is in a good condition.

But railings near the broken patch indicate that the auto stand is actually there. No auto driver wants to park their vehicles on that stretch as it is broken.

“There is no footpath on this stretch and the corner of the road is broken, we have to walk on the busy road. It is very dangerous,” said Pallavi, a passerby.

Kids often topple on the broken patches. Senior citizens also find it difficult to walk.

Techies were main target in outer ring road mugging

Bangalore Techies are main target of mugging especially in outer ring road.  With many cases of mugging coming to light police inspector L Y Rajesh said in a press release that the areas that have been targeted are around Iblur junction, between Iblur and Marathahalli, or Iblur to Kaikondrahalli or Kaikondrahalli to Wipro. The offenders are riding a black Pulsar with kannada registration number plate. They are two or three of them. According to victims, one person is stout and has a dark complexion and another one is lean with medium complexion.

They stop vehicle on a pretext, saying that victim caused an accident. They tell you, you have to pay the amount immediately, as the injured person is the brother of a local Don. They will persuade you to pay the money and speaks Kannada and broken Hindi. The target is usually a lone rider. Especially techies in Sarjapur, outer ring road were the main targets. Timings are usually between 11 am to 4 pm.

The HSR Layout police have issued a list of guidelines for citizens to prevent mugging and help the police in nabbing them. Police constables are now patrolling the same roads in plain clothes. In case of mugging or emergency, citizen can call these police for help.





How to Prevent and How You Can Help the Police in Nabbing Them

  • If you come across such an incident, be bold, do not panic.
  • Don’t get down from the vehicle. If they chase you, immediately call the police or reach the traffic police for help.
  • Stop the vehicle where there are people and raise an alarm.
  • Lock the internal locks of the vehicle. So that they cannot sit inside your vehicle.
  • If by chance they get into your vehicle, get out immediately – you will be in a public place. Raise your voice and call the people around.
  • Registration Number of offender’s vehicle is kannada and vicitm finds it difficult to read. In such case, take photograph of vehicle number plate and try to click their pictures with your cell phone.
  • If you are smart/tactful enough and can hold them in conversion, inform the police by way of SMS or call and assure that you will pay them and engage them till police reaches you.
  • You can even tell them that you can arrange money from your friend and take them to place, where you know the people and then try to catch them with the help of known people and hand over them to police.
  • If they try to threaten you or manhandle you, keep a pepper spray as a defense and use it properly and carefully “if necessary”.
  • Be cool and handle the situation diplomatically.
  • Don’t take too much risk. Your safety is more important.

Commercial spaces are coming up in Outer Ring Road

With better connectivity, commercial spaces are coming up in the outskirts. Easy access to different parts of the city, higher FAR, and large land parcels are making locations in the outskirts and along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) favourable for commercial development.






The ORR is also emerging as a leading destination for residential development as a result of the commercial growth, leading to a more balanced development pattern and also making the locations self reliant. Additionally, the Metro Rail will also be connecting some key entry points of the ORR, further adding to the attraction of the locations around. It connects important commercial and industrial centres such as Whitefield and Electronic city.

Emerging commercial hubs

According to source, in the north the Hebbal-Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretch, Bellary Road and Devanahalli are areas which are witnessing commercial development now. In the south, Bannerghatta Road, Hosur Road, Electronics City, and Sarjapur Road are coming up as commercial belts. In the east, Whitefield and the Marathahalli-Outer Ring Road stretches are emerging as commercial hubs. In the west, Mysore Road and Peenya have had some activity on the commercial front. Tumkur Road is witnessing development too.

There is a significant impact on the surrounding primary and secondary residential catchments due to increased commercial development. The absorption of office space in the first quarter of 2010 along the Hebbal-ORR was 0.03 million sqft. The projected supply for this year is 0.56 million sqft. Along Tumkur Road, while the absorption was 0.53 million sqft, the projected supply is 1.35 million sqft. Along the Marathahalli-Sarjapur ORR belt, around 3.43 million sqft of commercial space was absorbed in the first quarter of this year.

According to Karun Varma, Managing Director (Bangalore), JLLM, in the north, IT and ITeS companies are present and setting up offices around the Hebbal-ORR stretch. Along the ORR in the south, Electronics City, Bannerghatta Road, Hosur Road, and Sarjapur Road are the preferred locations for IT/ITeS and biotech companies. Whitefield, Marathahalli-ORR, and Old Madras Road have already seen commercial growth. They are witnessing the setting-up of IT/ITeS and semiconductor companies. In the west along the ORR, Mysore Road, Peenya, and Tumkur Road have IT/ITeS and manufacturing companies.

A report by Cushman & Wakefield lists out locations around Hebbal and the Marathahalli-Sarjapur Road stretch as upcoming commercial areas. Mysore Road and locations off Mysore Road have both commercial and industrial facilities. Tumkur Road mainly has industries. The southern part of the ORR is dominated by residential development with a few commercial office buildings most catering to IT and other service industries. There are a few stand-alone retail stores and factory outlets but currently, there are no mall developments. In future, this area is expected to witness a growth in residential development and some retail development too.

Kaustuv Roy, Executive Director (India), Cushman & Wakefield, adds, “Connectivity and accessibility to most locations across the city is the primary reason why the entire corridor has seen a growth in commercial office space activities. The eastern belt along the ORR is where the maximum commercial office space buildings are located which are a mix of both software parks and SEZs. This location is expected to witness further growth in commercial office space supply. There are a few residential and some highstreet and stand-alone retail establishments. This is a high potential corridor for retail development.”

BESCOM is to blame for Sarjapur traffic snarl

Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) workers dug the Sarjapur Outer Ring Road on Tuesday, which led to a traffic snarl between Marathalli and Eco Space. Commuters were stuck on the stretch for five hours. “The stretch is totally messed up. At least 4,000 vehicles are stuck and the people are in no mood to stop digging up the road,” said Rajesh S, who commutes regularly from Marathalli to Iblur.





The traffic police blamed BESCOM contractors for the chaos. BESCOM allegedly decided to dig stretches of the road without consulting the police or Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA), which led to a traffic snarl that had 4,000 vehicles stranded  between Marathalli to Eco Space.

“We gave them permission to make minor repairs.They dug too much. When we learnt of what they had done, we asked them to stop the work.They should have sought our permission before digging the roads to such an extent,” said Subhash Chandra, PSI, Madivala.

“This was completely unexpected.Neither Police nor we were informed.We could have arranged worked out alternative routes if we had been informed. This is a textbook example of how authorities work without any coordination. It is one of worst traffic jams on the stretch in recent days.Their staff dug the road despite knowing that traffic is high in the evenings.” said Vishwanath S, secretary, ORRCA.

BESCOM officials, however, denied they had not sought permission. “We had sought permission to dig about four feet of the road, only to find that the underground cables were damaged beyond our estimation. We had no option but to cut a wider swathe of the road. When we realized that there was a traffic jam, we stopped work,” said a senior BESCOM official.

Techies who took the Sarjapur Outer Ring Road (ORR) were stuck on the stretch for five hours between 4 pm and 9 pm due to road digging by the BESCOM. The traffic police blamed BESCOM contractors for the chaos.
