Open drains create mess, BBMP does cleaning job

12 May

Every time there are heavy showers the city is in a mess. And Sarjapur is no different. Sewage water spilling over to the roads is a common problem accentuated by people throwing garbage in drains.

If this is the condition in the pre-monsoon phase, one can imagine the scenario during peak monsoon.

On April 30, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) hired contractors to clean the open drains. Workers in the presence of contractors cleaned the open drains starting from the Bellandur outer ring road till Green Glen layout.

The drains were filled with vegetable peels and other eatables, dumped by people living on both sides of the road, resulting in a foul smell all around. Because of this, drains get clogged and after every rain, garbage and drain water spill over to the roads.

“We were troubled with the foul smell, but thank God, the BBMP cleaned the drains,” said a shopkeeper on the Bellandur outer ring road.

“We are private contractors hired on a daily basis by the BBMP. We have been told to clean up the drains at Bellandur road,” said the contractor.  Apart from the drains, they also cleaned the debris that had got collected on the road.

Glass buildings uncool for environment, say experts

15 Apr

In areas like Sarjapur, Marathalli and Agara, glass buildings are a common sight and more are coming up. The outer ring road of Sarjapur is full of IT parks and companies. These buildings look beautiful from the outside, but some environmentalists argue that these are actually harmful to the environment.

They say it is cooler inside such buildings but it is hotter outside. “These huge buildings are constructed firstly to make it look stylish and secondly the cost is less. If constructed with mud, cement and bricks the cost of the construction may go higher. So they build glass buildings and give a sun film coat which radiates the sunlight back to the environment,

thereby increasing the temperature outside,” said Nagesh Hegde, an environmentalist.

“The glass buildings keep the inside cool with consumption of less electricity. But the heat produced outside is very harmful. This heat produced is called ambient temperature,” added Hegde.

Come August and two flyovers will be ready in Mahadevpura

14 Apr

By the end of July, the two flyovers being constructed at Mahadevpura will be opened for the public, promising to end the traffic woes of people commuting in Marathalli Sarjapur.

The first flyover will be opened by the end of May and the second by the end of July,” said Nagraj Murthy, BDA engineer Mahadevpura.

The estimated cost of the flyovers, being built to ease congestion at Mahadevpura, is Rs 40 crore. As there are many tech parks at Sarjapur Road, there are huge traffic jams, especially during peak office hours.

After the flyovers are thrown open, people who commute daily towards Whitefield, Mahadevpura, Hosakote, Koramangala, etc will have a smooth drive.

The flyovers at Agara and Iblur have solved the traffic problem to a large extent. Proper roads, traffic signals and flyovers have made that stretch a smooth drive.

“The traffic officials are very vigilant at the junctions and they catch offenders who break rules and fine them on the spot,” said a biker.

Storm water drain repaired, residents say what a relief

13 Apr

In a relief to residents of Sarjapur, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has repaired the storm water drain (SWD) and cleared all blockages because of which dirty water has been flowing into nearby apartments such as SJR Redwoods, Park Vista and Ambalipura residency.

On March 19, Cityplus had reported the stink in the apartments due to the overflow of water from the storm water drain. After the report, BBMP officials inspected the site, repaired all the broken pipes and cleared the blocks that were hindering the flow of sewage. Over 50,000 people were affected by the problem.

According to the residents, the owner of Buluchee, a leather making company, had blocked the drain. He had claimed ownership of the land over which the SWD has been built. Though BBMP had repaired the pipe earlier, the Buluchee owner had blocked it again.

The residents then complained to the BBMP and the corporator of ward no. 150 Babu Reddy. “Babu Reddy gave a temporary solution by opening the blockage,” said the residents. Now with the blockage being cleared, the foul smell has reduced to an extent.

It is difficult to work with the gloves-Garbage collectors

20 Jan

Garbage collectors segregate dry and the wet waste. While sorting out wet waste, these collectors expose themselves to many infections which may affect their health in the long term.According to BBMP, all garbage collectors have been given a kit consisting of gloves to collect garbage. But in areas like Sarjapur, Indiranagar, Koramangala and HSR Layout, garbage collectors are seen collecting garbage without wearing gloves.

Garbage collectors had a strange explanation. “It is difficult to work with the gloves in the hand so I avoid using it,” said one of them.Though the garbage collectors say that wearing gloves makes their work difficult, there is an urgent need to spread awareness about the dangers of handling waste without gloves.

Generally infection starts with itching and it increases with various types of skin ailments. If they handle wet waste with bare hands, diseases like dermatitis are sure to occur as it begins on the surface of the fingers and hands,” said a skin specialist.

Though the garbage collectors say that wearing gloves makes their work difficult, there is an urgent need to spread awareness about the dangers of handling waste without gloves. Is BBMP listening?

Iblur Lake turns into watery grave

12 Jan

Iblur lake, off sarjapur Road, has turned into a graveyard of sorts. High pollution levels have killed hundreds of fish that are floating dead for the past three days, filling the air with stench.

And this comes just two months after a high court stricture to civic agencies, including BBMP, BDA and Lake Development Authority to not allow apartments to come up in the vicinity of lakes. This is an obvious massacre of aquatic species by pollution caused to the water body.

Residents of Iblur were shocked to see the dead fish floating on the lake shore and informed the BBMP. Their death has been attributed to sewage water being discharged into the lake, resulting in low oxygen levels for the fish.

Scene very grim, Groundwater levels falling

12 Jan

The city is facing shortage of water of 225 million liters of water per day. The groundwater levels are falling sharply and natural aquifers are drying.

Despite the exploding growth and spread of the city, to get even a basic need like water is a struggle. The city is facing a shortage of 225 million liters of water per day (MLD). While the demand is 1,125 MLD, the supply stands at 900 MLD. Around 20% to 25% of the population in the newly added areas depend solely on groundwater.

The groundwater levels are falling sharply and natural aquifers are drying. The large expanses of  Sarjapur, Electronic city and Bannerghatta Road that offer plush residential facilities to a major population of techies depend almost completely on groundwater.

The compulsory rainwater harvesting law also lost steam. The last date for the implementation of all eligible houses was May 2010. However, since people needed more time, it was extended. There is no fresh deadline.

The Cauvery 4th Stage, 2nd phase project that is supposed to bring extra 500 MLD of water will kick-start only in 2012. But experts feel that it is only a temporary solution
