Balconies unsafe for children

18 Jan

There are many apartments in Sarjapur, but you can see that the balconies in most of these apartments are not child-friendly. Even after fatal incidences of unsafe balconies, builders in the city are not giving proper attention to this.

If you notice the apartments in Bangalore properly, most of these are designed well.  But in making the apartment complexes stylish one, people have ignored to make the balconies in the houses safe for children. These are designed very low which is dangerous for the kids. In order to avoid children from going to the balconies, terrace gardening is done in most of the apartments in Sarjapur. Some even placed big tin sheets in the balcony to fill up the huge gaps in between railings. There are also apartments in Sarjapur, where there are no balconies in the apartments.Setting firm rules with regard to balcony safety, is protection for everybody.

Some helpful tips

  • Ensure that the access door is securely locked at all times and put the key where your child cannot possibility reach it.
  • Make sure that there is nothing available to enable any child to climb up and hang over the wall or railings.
  • Secure a safety “fence”, or even a sheet of perspex, firmly along open railings. Babies and small children can get through surprisingly small spaces.
  • Terrace gardening or Balcony Gardening helps to avoid children from going or playing in the balconies.
  • If you live in an apartment or even visit friends who live in an apartment do remember to consider balcony safety.

City’s commercial centres are taking another look at the safety aspects

26 Feb

In the wake of the Carlton Towers Bangalore fire accident, the owners’ associations of the city’s commercial complexes are taking another look at the safety aspects in place to avert fire mishaps and loss of life. Basic fire-fighting equipment and regular maintenance of fire-fighting equipment will go a long way in preventing loss of life.

Along with fire-fighting equipment, the need for awareness and mock drills at regular intervals are increasingly being felt. Another aspect is making occupants aware of exits and the best way to get out safely. “A short circuit is the cause of most fire mishaps. Just a few days ago, we appointed an electrical contractor to check the wiring of the whole building. Based on his report and the drawings that he will be submitting this weekend, we will be chalking out a strategy to put into place a fool-proof system,” said U K Kamath, Manager, Mittal Towers Commercial Complex Owner’s Association.

“A cause for concern is people panicked and jumped off from the top floors. Therefore, we are going to conduct a mock fire drill. This will enable them to identify the fire exits and four staircases in each block to leave the building in case of a fire. The moment the fire alarm goes off, the elevators will be switched off, and people will have to make use of the stairs. We will also be opening the terrace door to enable those on the top floors to escape,” explains P Vasu, General Manager, Manipal Centre Apartment Owner’s Association.

Fire safety guidelines

  • Each floors or family in an apartment must have proper fire extinguisher and occupants must know how to use them.
  • Call fire department and do not assume anyone else has already called the fire department.
  • Never use lift for leaving the premises or apartment. The moment the fire alarm goes off, occupants will have to make use of the stairs.
  • Ensure occupants are aware of exits and the best way to get out safely.
  • You should not use your fire extinguisher if you’re too nervous or you don’t know how to use them.
  • Install glow signs and paint arrows on exit doors to guide occupants as well as those who are new to the building, during a fire emergency.
  • Hold mock drills at regular intervals to create awareness on procedures to be followed in times of an evacuation.
