Residents of Sarjapur create a ‘bench’mark

21 Jan

Residents of Sarjapur create a ‘bench’mark. Residents came forward to help students of Iblur Government Primary School who were sitting on the stony, cold floor, even during winter.

Some 200 students of Iblur Government Primary School shouted with glee and did a little jig when they saw benches in their classrooms. Till then, they were sitting on the stony, cold floor, even during winter, and there wasn’t much they could do about it.

And then, a few people staying near Sarjapur Road visited the school and saw the children’s plight.

They mobilized support from different layouts in the tech belt and managed to get benches for four classrooms and woven floor mats for the younger children.

The inconspicuous school building, located on a service road just before the Iblur junction, caters to 260 students, from classes I to VII.

Many of us from the locality have been visiting the school for the last few years and helping in some way. Some of us are part of the Lion’s Club of HSR Layout and got two classrooms constructed through the organisation. A few months back, we noticed the kids sitting on the cold floor. We decided to take it up as a community initiative,” says Jayaraman Nathan, an entrepreneur living in Lakeshore Homes Layout.

This led to a series of discussions through e-groups of resident associations and they estimated that each bench which could seat three students would cost Rs 3,000.

“Request mails were sent out to e-groups and the response was overwhelming. People came forward not only with money but also their expertise on the design and materials required. It truly became a community effort,

Sarjapur to get own fire station in New Year

06 Jan

Finally, Sarjapur residents will get a fully designed fire station at the Sarjapur Main Road. The fire station is likely to be inaugurated by the second week of January.

Of late, several fire incidents have been reported from Sarjapur Outer Ring Road. People still shiver by the memories of the horrific fire accident at Carlton towers at Domlur. Citizens believe if the fire brigade would have reached the accident site on time, then the casualties of the accident would have been less. In such cases, fire stations and fire brigades play a vital role in saving lives.

It is very necessary to have fire stations at every area. “This fire station is being set up so that fire cases in Sarjapur could be handled as soon as possible. There are fire stations at Electronic city, Mahadevpura but reaching Sarjapur on time was very difficult. It used to take us minimum of 15 to 20 minutes to reach the accident site. Now, this fire station at Sarjapur Main Road will help us to reach the fire site within six to seven minutes,” said Nagaraja BM, fire station officer.

On Sarjapur road, there are mainly huge apartments on the main road and either side of the Outer Ring Road is filled with IT tech parks and companies. Lots of companies can be seen till Mahadevpura. Having a fire station in the vicinity will be a great relief for the residents as the fire brigade can reach any site in Sarjapur within five to seven minutes.

Sarjapur residents busy in hiring Private Surveyors

25 Jun

After receiving notice from the BBMP, informing them about acquisition of a portion of their property for road widening, residents of Sarjapur are busy in hiring Private Surveyors. The notice says that the Apartment Association should submit land records using the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) form as the road is to be widened by 45 feet. In TDR notices, the BBMP only mentions the proposed road widening width. They do not mention the specific amount or how much property will be lost to road widening.

The residents of Golden Corner Apartment Bangalore on Sarjapur Road decided to carry out a survey after speaking to a BBMP Junior Engineer. Bharti Jayshankar, President, Golden Corner Apartments’ Association, says that the engineer himself gave them a contact number of a land surveyor, Alcon Surveyors. On contacting Alcon Surveyors, they said that they have so far not carried out any such survey in the city but have recently started a pilot project for the BBMP for road widening. But later they found Guideline Surveys in the yellow pages and approached them for the task.

Guideline Surveys’ Managing Partner, L A Arri, says that people have been approaching them for surveys with respect to road widening, for three main reasons. They give them precise measurements of their property, calculate how much property will be lost to road widening, and if required land includes the building or only setback.

“People are afraid that more land will be taken and less compensation will be given”, says Arri.He showed a survey map of one of the road widening projects they worked on.The maps are given in a digital format to the client and it shows what the property will look like after land loss. The maps also include point-to-point information on the location of poles, trees and so on, on the property.Arri says the BBMP will not give all this information to residents.

BBMP’s Chief Engineer (Major Roads), T N Chikkarayappa says that that TDR notices only mention the length of road widening to be done. “We anyways make markings on the wall”, he adds. The residents are provided all information in a pamphlet. “You tell me who has doubts, I’ll tell my engineers to give information”, he says. About people carrying out surveys privately, Chikkarayappa says, “If there is any doubt, they can definitely carry out surveys and check for any discrepancy.”

BBMP ignored Sarjapur residents’ plea for LED bulbs

03 Jun

The residents of Sarjapur had suggested BBMP to fix LED bulbs in newly-erected electric poles. LED bulbs consumes less electricity than sodium lights or CFL bulbs. Shortage of electricity has become one of the major problems of Bangalore. Residents of Sarjapur had suggested to the BBMP official to fix LED bulbs in the newly-erected electric poles to cut down power consumption. The BBMP officials initially agreed to the proposal, but now they have installed new street lights and new poles with sodium lights. The sodium bulbs are of 500 watt, which consumes a great amount of electricity.

In order to prove the point, the residents even installed LED lights in one of the poles. LED bulbs would have considerably reduced the consumption of electricity if BBMP had fix them in newly-erected electric poles. But the authorities have totally ignored the suggestions of residents and fixed sodium lamps which will consume a great amount of electricity.

We all know that the whole of Bangalore is “clanging” with construction activities of one form or another. All these areas require light and so the BBMP is erecting new electric poles in different areas which also include Sarjapur. It seems the problem of shortage of electricity in this area will persist for some more time as BBMP is installing new street lights and new poles with sodium lights says a resident of Sarjapur. Another resident in Sarjapur said, “What is the use of installing such high power bulbs which consume so much of electricity and then say that there is power shortage?”
