At Least Four Thefts in Less Than 10 Days on Volvo

31 Dec

The success of BMTC’s Volvo fleet in attracting an upmarket class of commuters has drawn the attention of pick-pockets who were a menace in the Parisaravahinis (blue buses). Techies travelling between Ramamurthy Nagar and Marathahalli are increasingly becoming victims of such gangs. Shockingly, the thieves are often well-dressed women accompanied by a couple of men who lull co-passengers into complacency with polite smiles.

At least four thefts have been reported (on bus nos 500A and 500B) between Ramamurthy Nagar and Marathahalli in less than 10 days. It is very difficult to make out pick-pockets from their appearance as they are well-dressed and polite to co-passengers.

At least four thefts have been reported in less than 10 days on Volvos plying between Ramamurthy Nagar and Marathahalli. With most of the Volvos operating between posh localities, these gangs see it as an opportunity to get their hands on big moolah as compared to their take in other buses. Techies are increasingly becoming victims of such gangs.

Agara flyover will come as relief for Techies

09 Jul

Two flyovers on the stretch – the Agara flyover towards Marathhalli and the Iblur flyover – will be thrown open to the public in the next few days.  The Agara flyover, connecting Silk Board Junction to Marathhalli, will open for public use by July 10, and the Iblur flyover is expected to be thrown open in a week. The project will not just ease traffic at the two busy junctions but also make the Outer Ring Road signal free for commuters taking this stretch.

“It will really help people going from Bellandur towards Agara and those coming from Silk Board to Bellandur and Marathhalli, as the traffic will be free flowing on both these sides. Definitely the travel time will be reduced. We had deployed private security personnel to man traffic at Iblur and Agara junctions and are now planning to redeploy them at Bellandur and Marathhalli junctions, as there are chances of a traffic pile up here. But the opening of the flyovers is definitely good news,” said Vishwanath Seetharam, Facility Manager, AOL and General Secretary, Outer Ring Road Companies Association.

“We are, unofficially, opening these two flyovers to ease the traffic on this stretch to some extent. Also, once the Agara flyover from Silk Board to Marathhalli is thrown open to the public, we can concentrate on the construction of the second flyover at Agara, in the opposite direction (Marathhalli towards Silk Board). Because of the heavy traffic flow here, we were finding it difficult to continue work at a fast pace on this particular stretch,” Said BDA Executive Engineer Nagaraja Murthy, working on the project.

The flyovers will come as relief for staffers of tech companies on the Outer Ring Road-Marathahalli stretch. The project, which includes three flyovers – two of them at Agara and one at Iblur will mean free flow of traffic to Silk Board, Bellandur, Marathhalli and Sarjapur.  The Rs 93.94-crore Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) project has been executed by Nagarjuna Construction Company. The entire project, including the second flyover at Agara, will be completed in September.

Techies were main target in outer ring road mugging

04 Jun

Bangalore Techies are main target of mugging especially in outer ring road.  With many cases of mugging coming to light police inspector L Y Rajesh said in a press release that the areas that have been targeted are around Iblur junction, between Iblur and Marathahalli, or Iblur to Kaikondrahalli or Kaikondrahalli to Wipro. The offenders are riding a black Pulsar with kannada registration number plate. They are two or three of them. According to victims, one person is stout and has a dark complexion and another one is lean with medium complexion.

They stop vehicle on a pretext, saying that victim caused an accident. They tell you, you have to pay the amount immediately, as the injured person is the brother of a local Don. They will persuade you to pay the money and speaks Kannada and broken Hindi. The target is usually a lone rider. Especially techies in Sarjapur, outer ring road were the main targets. Timings are usually between 11 am to 4 pm.

The HSR Layout police have issued a list of guidelines for citizens to prevent mugging and help the police in nabbing them. Police constables are now patrolling the same roads in plain clothes. In case of mugging or emergency, citizen can call these police for help.

How to Prevent and How You Can Help the Police in Nabbing Them

  • If you come across such an incident, be bold, do not panic.
  • Don’t get down from the vehicle. If they chase you, immediately call the police or reach the traffic police for help.
  • Stop the vehicle where there are people and raise an alarm.
  • Lock the internal locks of the vehicle. So that they cannot sit inside your vehicle.
  • If by chance they get into your vehicle, get out immediately – you will be in a public place. Raise your voice and call the people around.
  • Registration Number of offender’s vehicle is kannada and vicitm finds it difficult to read. In such case, take photograph of vehicle number plate and try to click their pictures with your cell phone.
  • If you are smart/tactful enough and can hold them in conversion, inform the police by way of SMS or call and assure that you will pay them and engage them till police reaches you.
  • You can even tell them that you can arrange money from your friend and take them to place, where you know the people and then try to catch them with the help of known people and hand over them to police.
  • If they try to threaten you or manhandle you, keep a pepper spray as a defense and use it properly and carefully “if necessary”.
  • Be cool and handle the situation diplomatically.
  • Don’t take too much risk. Your safety is more important.

Please be bold. Bangalore is still safe. There is nothing to panic. A squad comprising of four police personnel is formed to nab these fellows. Apartment complexes depends private water suppliers

22 Feb

Most of the apartment complexes on Sarjapur Road, Bellandur junction area, Bannerghatta Road, Whitefield and Marathahalli depend on bore-well water. But since these wells go dry, the residents and the management of the complexes turn to private water suppliers. The Outer Ring Road is dotted with huge high-rises but these apartments are not covered by the BWSSB yet.

“BWSSB had assured to give water in 2004. Till date there is no water. We are on a rocky terrain and so cannot access borewell water. All we can do is buy tanker water. We need 70 to 80 tankers every day to sustain these 550 apartments. How can the authorities give clearance to these huge apartments without any surety of water supply?” questions Raj Ramchandani, management committee member, Springfields apartments near Outer Ring Road.

The residents of erstwhile City Municipal Councils (CMCs) are yet to get Cauvery water supply. So they totally depend on private suppliers and shell out as much as Rs 8 lakh per month. There are other apartments too which rely on borewells. The Sun City is another huge apartment block near Sarjapur Road where water shortage looms. With around 1,300 apartments, the consumption is around 10 lakh litres to 12 lakh litres per day. The building authorities are also worried that people are not paying heed to the looming water disaster.

Sun City has a sewage treatment plant (STP) that recycles around 25,000 liters per day which is then used for watering the garden. Sobha Garnet has a groundwater recharge system and specific car washing days and timings and marked days for landscaping and gardening.

A BWSSB official said: “There is no law to restrict private water tanker supply business. At most the BBMP health officials can take action against them if they supply unhygienic water.”

Flyover work on HSR Layout-to-Marathahalli stretch in full swing

19 Jan

What with flyover work on in full swing in the HSR Layout-to-Marathahalli stretch, the resultant traffic jams have galvanised companies on the Outer Ring Road-Sarjapur Road to take matters into their own hands.

Whenever there is a traffic hold-up that lasts for hours, most of us fly into a rage and blame each other and the traffic police for the mess. But here is an example of corporate responsibility at its best.

Tired of the regular traffic snarls experienced on the 7-km stretch between HSR Layout and Marathahalli and the neighbouring Sarjapur and Haralur roads because of the flyover construction that is in progress in the area, several tech and non-IT companies decided to get together and chalk out an action plan to smoothen road traffic. For starters, a clique of 22 companies on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) — including Nokia, Cisco, AOL, Intel, Accenture, Northern Trust, Aditya Birla group, RMZ Corp and so on — have deployed 16 security guards at 10 junctions on this stretch to man traffic. Total Mall on Sarjapur Road has stationed one security guard to regulate traffic in front of their building near Kaikondrahalli Lake. Read more..
