Residents of Sarjapur create a ‘bench’mark

21 Jan

Residents of Sarjapur create a ‘bench’mark. Residents came forward to help students of Iblur Government Primary School who were sitting on the stony, cold floor, even during winter.

Some 200 students of Iblur Government Primary School shouted with glee and did a little jig when they saw benches in their classrooms. Till then, they were sitting on the stony, cold floor, even during winter, and there wasn’t much they could do about it.

And then, a few people staying near Sarjapur Road visited the school and saw the children’s plight.

They mobilized support from different layouts in the tech belt and managed to get benches for four classrooms and woven floor mats for the younger children.

The inconspicuous school building, located on a service road just before the Iblur junction, caters to 260 students, from classes I to VII.

Many of us from the locality have been visiting the school for the last few years and helping in some way. Some of us are part of the Lion’s Club of HSR Layout and got two classrooms constructed through the organisation. A few months back, we noticed the kids sitting on the cold floor. We decided to take it up as a community initiative,” says Jayaraman Nathan, an entrepreneur living in Lakeshore Homes Layout.

This led to a series of discussions through e-groups of resident associations and they estimated that each bench which could seat three students would cost Rs 3,000.

“Request mails were sent out to e-groups and the response was overwhelming. People came forward not only with money but also their expertise on the design and materials required. It truly became a community effort,

Iblur Lake turns into watery grave

12 Jan

Iblur lake, off sarjapur Road, has turned into a graveyard of sorts. High pollution levels have killed hundreds of fish that are floating dead for the past three days, filling the air with stench.

And this comes just two months after a high court stricture to civic agencies, including BBMP, BDA and Lake Development Authority to not allow apartments to come up in the vicinity of lakes. This is an obvious massacre of aquatic species by pollution caused to the water body.

Residents of Iblur were shocked to see the dead fish floating on the lake shore and informed the BBMP. Their death has been attributed to sewage water being discharged into the lake, resulting in low oxygen levels for the fish.

Techies were main target in outer ring road mugging

04 Jun

Bangalore Techies are main target of mugging especially in outer ring road.  With many cases of mugging coming to light police inspector L Y Rajesh said in a press release that the areas that have been targeted are around Iblur junction, between Iblur and Marathahalli, or Iblur to Kaikondrahalli or Kaikondrahalli to Wipro. The offenders are riding a black Pulsar with kannada registration number plate. They are two or three of them. According to victims, one person is stout and has a dark complexion and another one is lean with medium complexion.

They stop vehicle on a pretext, saying that victim caused an accident. They tell you, you have to pay the amount immediately, as the injured person is the brother of a local Don. They will persuade you to pay the money and speaks Kannada and broken Hindi. The target is usually a lone rider. Especially techies in Sarjapur, outer ring road were the main targets. Timings are usually between 11 am to 4 pm.

The HSR Layout police have issued a list of guidelines for citizens to prevent mugging and help the police in nabbing them. Police constables are now patrolling the same roads in plain clothes. In case of mugging or emergency, citizen can call these police for help.

How to Prevent and How You Can Help the Police in Nabbing Them

  • If you come across such an incident, be bold, do not panic.
  • Don’t get down from the vehicle. If they chase you, immediately call the police or reach the traffic police for help.
  • Stop the vehicle where there are people and raise an alarm.
  • Lock the internal locks of the vehicle. So that they cannot sit inside your vehicle.
  • If by chance they get into your vehicle, get out immediately – you will be in a public place. Raise your voice and call the people around.
  • Registration Number of offender’s vehicle is kannada and vicitm finds it difficult to read. In such case, take photograph of vehicle number plate and try to click their pictures with your cell phone.
  • If you are smart/tactful enough and can hold them in conversion, inform the police by way of SMS or call and assure that you will pay them and engage them till police reaches you.
  • You can even tell them that you can arrange money from your friend and take them to place, where you know the people and then try to catch them with the help of known people and hand over them to police.
  • If they try to threaten you or manhandle you, keep a pepper spray as a defense and use it properly and carefully “if necessary”.
  • Be cool and handle the situation diplomatically.
  • Don’t take too much risk. Your safety is more important.

Please be bold. Bangalore is still safe. There is nothing to panic. A squad comprising of four police personnel is formed to nab these fellows. Traffic woes in HSR Layout seem to be unending

19 May

With the BDA constructing another flyover in the area, harassed residents will have to bear the brunt of traffic diversions yet again. With the completion of Agara flyover, residents of HSR Layout Sectors 2, 3 and 4 could have heaved a sigh of relief. But with the new flyover project, problems are back to square one. The new flyover work which has started on 14th Main is directly affecting residents of Sectors 6 and 7.

Brigadier R S Murthy, president of HSR Layout Sector-2 RWA, said in the last 3-4 years, people of this area have been subjected to tremendous hardships, thanks to flyover work. “During 2007-08, it was bridge work at 14th Main and the Ring Road junction. The work lingered on for over 15 months. During this time, all entry points to HSR Layout except for one or two were closed from the Ring Road side.”

In 2009-10, traffic from Sarjapur and Ring Road was diverted to HSR Layout, again because of the Agara Circle flyover. “Why didn’t city planners think of building the new flyover two years ago when bridge construction was on at the same place? We fear this time too incoming traffic from Madivala side will be diverted to HSR Layout,” Murthy said.

The 525-metre Agara flyover connects Sarjapur Road to Silk Board junction. “Work here will be over by July 1,” said a BDA official. With the completion of Agara flyover, residents of HSR Layout Sectors 2, 3 and 4 could have heaved a sigh of relief.  The Iblur and Agara flyovers built at Rs 93 crore connect commuters from Bellandur to Agara.

“It appears that we are being taken for granted. Traffic diversion to a residential area has created so much of chaos,” said R S Hiremath, vicepresident of HSR Layout residents’ welfare association (RWA).
