It is difficult to work with the gloves-Garbage collectors

20 Jan

Garbage collectors segregate dry and the wet waste. While sorting out wet waste, these collectors expose themselves to many infections which may affect their health in the long term.According to BBMP, all garbage collectors have been given a kit consisting of gloves to collect garbage. But in areas like Sarjapur, Indiranagar, Koramangala and HSR Layout, garbage collectors are seen collecting garbage without wearing gloves.

Garbage collectors had a strange explanation. “It is difficult to work with the gloves in the hand so I avoid using it,” said one of them.Though the garbage collectors say that wearing gloves makes their work difficult, there is an urgent need to spread awareness about the dangers of handling waste without gloves.

Generally infection starts with itching and it increases with various types of skin ailments. If they handle wet waste with bare hands, diseases like dermatitis are sure to occur as it begins on the surface of the fingers and hands,” said a skin specialist.

Though the garbage collectors say that wearing gloves makes their work difficult, there is an urgent need to spread awareness about the dangers of handling waste without gloves. Is BBMP listening?

Residents had the shock of their lives on Mysterious dog deaths

22 Nov

Residents of HSR Layout had the shock of their lives looking at the pile of dead dogs near the garbage pit on Sunday morning. The residents of Jakkasandra, Venkatapura and HSR Layout said around 40 stray and pet dogs were poisoned to death. When BBMP garbage vans came to pick up the carcasses, residents filed a police complaint to investigate the case and also appealed to animal rights organizations for help.

Residents of HSR Layout who regularly fed stray dogs assumed the death of their respective dogs to be isolated cases and buried them without suspecting any foul play. Later they realized that similar incidents had occurred in neighboring areas and streets. Some residents were successful in saving their pet dogs. When they saw their dog falling ill, they called the nearby veterinarian for help.

Residents spotted several dead dogs piled up near the garbage pits, frothing and bleeding from their mouths. The residents of Jakkasandra, Venkatapura and HSR Layout said around 40 stray and pet dogs were poisoned to death by feeding them kababs laced with poison early Sunday morning. But the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike officials said only 20 dogs had died. They must have eaten the poisoned meat then and died.  The residents filed a police complaint to investigate the case and also appealed to animal rights organizations for help.

Dump yard turned into Parks

01 Jun

BBMP inaugurated ten parks on Monday, eight of these are located in HSR Layout. The vacant sites which were the hub of illegal activities and dump yard turned into parks for green lovers. The eight parks in HSR Layout spread across 4th, 5th, 7th and first sector have relaxing places for senior citizens, play area for children and is a heaven for green lovers.

Lakshmi Anand, Lions’ Club member, told that the parks had given a face-lift to the entire area. “HSR is a green hub now. The horticulture department has not touched the existing trees while developing the areas as parks. That is why one of the parks looks like a rain forest with thick canopies.”

BBMP’s horticulture department adopted Indonesia’s Bali parks as model to uplift two parks of the city. Besides, there are fountains and a lotus pond inside the park. The design of park is adopted without loosing any existing trees and the design adopted suits the existing scenario of the park. The work on these parks began about a year back and was completed in quick time, say residents.

“The ambience of HSR Layout and Bali is similar. Parks in Indonesia usually have a place exclusively developed for meditation and relaxation which we replicated here. It is like an open air dhyana centre inside the park. Besides, there are fountains and a lotus pond inside the park. We have not cut any tree, but have adopted a design that suits the existing scenario of the park,” said Nisarga, landscaper who designed the parks.  “BBMP has made use of the horticulture techniques of Bali. Medicinal plants will be made available for sale in all these parks. BBMP has spent about Rs 39 lakh for the development of the parks” said B P Anand, horticulture superintendent, Bommanahalli zone, BBMP.  “Development of parks will help curb the land mafia. Viratnagar, one of the backward areas in the city, has now seen a facelift with the opening of a park,” said Ananth Kumar who inaugurated the parks.

BBMP inaugurated ten parks on a single day. The vacant sites were the hub of illegal activities, under threat of encroachment by land mafia.  Now the park is relaxing place for senior citizens, play area for children and is a heaven for green lovers. Residents thanked the BBMP and respective person for turning vacant sites that were dump yards and hub of illegal activities into green parks.

Flyover work on HSR Layout-to-Marathahalli stretch in full swing

19 Jan

What with flyover work on in full swing in the HSR Layout-to-Marathahalli stretch, the resultant traffic jams have galvanised companies on the Outer Ring Road-Sarjapur Road to take matters into their own hands.

Whenever there is a traffic hold-up that lasts for hours, most of us fly into a rage and blame each other and the traffic police for the mess. But here is an example of corporate responsibility at its best.

Tired of the regular traffic snarls experienced on the 7-km stretch between HSR Layout and Marathahalli and the neighbouring Sarjapur and Haralur roads because of the flyover construction that is in progress in the area, several tech and non-IT companies decided to get together and chalk out an action plan to smoothen road traffic. For starters, a clique of 22 companies on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) — including Nokia, Cisco, AOL, Intel, Accenture, Northern Trust, Aditya Birla group, RMZ Corp and so on — have deployed 16 security guards at 10 junctions on this stretch to man traffic. Total Mall on Sarjapur Road has stationed one security guard to regulate traffic in front of their building near Kaikondrahalli Lake. Read more..
