Open drains create mess, BBMP does cleaning job

12 May

Every time there are heavy showers the city is in a mess. And Sarjapur is no different. Sewage water spilling over to the roads is a common problem accentuated by people throwing garbage in drains.

If this is the condition in the pre-monsoon phase, one can imagine the scenario during peak monsoon.

On April 30, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) hired contractors to clean the open drains. Workers in the presence of contractors cleaned the open drains starting from the Bellandur outer ring road till Green Glen layout.

The drains were filled with vegetable peels and other eatables, dumped by people living on both sides of the road, resulting in a foul smell all around. Because of this, drains get clogged and after every rain, garbage and drain water spill over to the roads.

“We were troubled with the foul smell, but thank God, the BBMP cleaned the drains,” said a shopkeeper on the Bellandur outer ring road.

“We are private contractors hired on a daily basis by the BBMP. We have been told to clean up the drains at Bellandur road,” said the contractor.  Apart from the drains, they also cleaned the debris that had got collected on the road.

Pay your tax before April 30 and get 5 per cent rebate

14 Apr

It’s April and time to pay your annual property tax to Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for the new financial year through the Self Assessment Scheme (SAS).

With property tax collection for 2011-12 beginning from April 1, property owners can avail 5 per cent rebate on full payment of tax for 2011 -12 if paid before April 30.

The BBMP was contemplating to hike property tax by 15 per cent as per the revised SAS rulebook. However, the taxpayers can now heave a sigh of relief as the civic body has dropped the idea.

Taxpayers can pay the tax in two instalments without penalty or availing rebate if the first half-year instalment is paid between May 1 and May 30. The second half-year instalment without penalty or availing rebate can be paid between October 1 and November 29. From November 30, a penalty of 2 per cent on the tax amount will be levied every month for the late payment of property tax.

Speaking to Cityplus, BBMP deputy commissioner (Revenue) I Ramakanth said that taxpayers can also pay property tax through credit or debit cards at no extra charge from this year onwards as part of cashless transaction.

Storm water drain repaired, residents say what a relief

13 Apr

In a relief to residents of Sarjapur, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has repaired the storm water drain (SWD) and cleared all blockages because of which dirty water has been flowing into nearby apartments such as SJR Redwoods, Park Vista and Ambalipura residency.

On March 19, Cityplus had reported the stink in the apartments due to the overflow of water from the storm water drain. After the report, BBMP officials inspected the site, repaired all the broken pipes and cleared the blocks that were hindering the flow of sewage. Over 50,000 people were affected by the problem.

According to the residents, the owner of Buluchee, a leather making company, had blocked the drain. He had claimed ownership of the land over which the SWD has been built. Though BBMP had repaired the pipe earlier, the Buluchee owner had blocked it again.

The residents then complained to the BBMP and the corporator of ward no. 150 Babu Reddy. “Babu Reddy gave a temporary solution by opening the blockage,” said the residents. Now with the blockage being cleared, the foul smell has reduced to an extent.
