Hosur Road to get three underpasses

26 May

Good News for the techies community and others commuting to and from Electronics City and Koramangala. BBMP’s new project for three underpasses on the arterial road.

Hosur Road, the tech corridor that links Electronics City with Bangalore, will get three underpasses at key junctions for a smoother everyday commute. The underpasses, at an estimated cost of Rs 29 crore, will come up near Forum Mall, Mari Gowda junction (Madiwala checkpost) and Sarjapur Road junction.

The project has got the nod from BBMP’s major works standing committee, and is expected to be executed after the civic budget is out in the first week of June.

Mr. G H Ramchandra, standing committee chairman said, “It is one of the most important projects for us. There is a major traffic problem during the peak hours there, especially in the evenings. We have planned the underpasses near Forum Mall, at the Mari Gowda Road junction near the Madiwala checkpost, and at the Sarjapur junction near St John’s Hospital. We will make provisions for the project in the budget.”

The peak traffic density at Forum Mall is 10,000 vehicles per hour, while it is 8,000 at Mari Gowda junction and 14,000 at Sarjapur junction. During peak hours, it takes around 20 minutes to go from Sarjapur junction to Forum Mall. After the project’s completion, that is expected to be reduced to just 10 minutes.

Mr. Lokesh, Executive Engineer said, “These three are the most important junctions in the city. Traffic density is very high and commuters are invariably stuck in traffic jams. The objective of the underpasses is that not a single vehicle should stop at these junctions. Each underpass will be 7.50 metres wide, enough to accommodate two buses easily. The underpass we built at Maharani’s junction is six metres wide, making it difficult for a bus and a car to go through it simultaneously.”

Commuters from Mari Gowda Road towards Koramangala will have to take a curved ramp from the Forum Mall underpass, while those from Koramangala towards Adugodi Road will have to go through the underpass.

Mr. K T Nagaraja, chief engineer in-charge, major works, said, “This major road connects the central business district with the south of the city as well as Hosur in Tamil Nadu. Koramangala and Electronics City are software and biotech hubs, and Hosur Road is a vital arterial road linking this zone to the heart of the city.”

Open drains create mess, BBMP does cleaning job

12 May

Every time there are heavy showers the city is in a mess. And Sarjapur is no different. Sewage water spilling over to the roads is a common problem accentuated by people throwing garbage in drains.

If this is the condition in the pre-monsoon phase, one can imagine the scenario during peak monsoon.

On April 30, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) hired contractors to clean the open drains. Workers in the presence of contractors cleaned the open drains starting from the Bellandur outer ring road till Green Glen layout.

The drains were filled with vegetable peels and other eatables, dumped by people living on both sides of the road, resulting in a foul smell all around. Because of this, drains get clogged and after every rain, garbage and drain water spill over to the roads.

“We were troubled with the foul smell, but thank God, the BBMP cleaned the drains,” said a shopkeeper on the Bellandur outer ring road.

“We are private contractors hired on a daily basis by the BBMP. We have been told to clean up the drains at Bellandur road,” said the contractor.  Apart from the drains, they also cleaned the debris that had got collected on the road.

Drain water enters basements of apartments in Sarjapur

15 Apr

Water from storm water drain has started overflowing and flooded the basement of apartments like SJR Redwoods, Park Vista, Ambalipura residency in Sarjapur.Residents of SJR Redwoods have complained to the BBMP. “The water was about two to three feet in our basement,” said a resident.

Around 50, 000 people reside in these apartments. The residents allege that Buluchee (a leather making company) has blocked the drain. The owner has claimed the land on which the storm water drain stands belongs to him.”We have been complaining for more than a week now but nothing has been done yet.

They have blocked the drainage path from both the sides because of which sewage water cannot drain out,” said Shalini Mathur, a resident of Park Vista.

150 bus shelters to be built across the city

31 Mar

The BBMP will construct 150 bus shelters all over the city in the next few months, some of which will come up on the Marathalli Sarjapur road.

The stretch from Marathalli bridge to Sarjapur road has several bus stops but only one bus shelter. There are more than 15 bus stops starting from Marathalli to Agara junction. “Not a single bus shelter is in Sarjapur,” said Navin a commuter.
Cityplus has been filing reports about the lack of bus shelters and the problems faced by the commuters in this area. Finally, the plea has been heard and the BBMP is going to build bus shelters.

“We will be building 150 bus shelters all over the city and two-three in Marathalli Sarjapur road,” said Gopal, Advertisement Department BBMP.

Currently, there are only signboards indicating bus shelters and people have to wait for buses under the scorching sun. “We are going to start work within one month,”

To start with, the BBMP has constructed a bus shelter at the stretch of Marathalli till Agara junction. “This shelter is of great help,” said a daily commuter.

Save Sarjapur, say yes to greenery

16 Feb

Sarjapur (Sarjapur Road) is turning into a concrete jungle with a fast pace real estate development happening. Apartments, Villas, Tech parks, Schools and Hospitals are coming up along Marathahalli, Sarjapur road as well the Sarjapur outer ring road, leaving little breathing space for greenery.

Many trees have been cut with re-plantation hardly happening.
With summer approaching and greenery vanishing fast, residents of Sarjapur are going to have a tough time under the scorching sun.

“I think this summer we are going to face the deadly heat. It’s getting tougher every year. BBMP should do something about it,” said Raman a commuter. With no bus sheds, daily commuters are also going to have a horrendous time waiting under the sun, especially kids.

Residents of Sarjapur have been planting trees around the Bellandur Lake, and in front of their apartments and taking care of them. While BBMP has promised to plant trees, it remains to be seen how far they are successful.
