Cycle your way for a clean, green and healthy city

13 May

At a time when fuel prices are soaring and pollution and traffic jams are becoming a daily headache, there are a few people who are showing the green way out – cycles.

If one moves down the Sarjapur-Marathalli road, a few people could be seen cycling. Some are techies, some businessmen and some college students. While some cycle for physical fitness, others use the two-wheeler to commute. If others emulate them, there will be less traffic in the city and noise and air pollution can be reduced to a great extent.

Most of the people who use cycles belong to the 20-45 age groups. Samim, a freelance coach and a cyclist by profession, cycles everyday to his office from JP Nagar to Marathalli. “I like cycling as it keeps me healthy. I do it because I want to reduce my carbon footprint.”

He does it to save time as well. Samim says, “If I take my car it takes me an hour to reach Marathalli from JP Nagar. If I take my bicycle, it takes around half an hour.

There are many others who prefer cycling but cannot do because of time constraints. “It is a good initiative to save the environment as well as save petrol. We are running short of natural resources like petrol, so if we can save some of it by using the cycle, then it would be great for the coming years.

If we use a cycle to cover shorter distances then it will at least help in reducing the pollution level,” said InduPriya, engineering student.

“As I am busy, I have not been able to find time for cycling. If I can manage time, then I will think of using the cycle as my mode of transportation to reach my work place as well,” said an entrepreneur.

Open drains create mess, BBMP does cleaning job

12 May

Every time there are heavy showers the city is in a mess. And Sarjapur is no different. Sewage water spilling over to the roads is a common problem accentuated by people throwing garbage in drains.

If this is the condition in the pre-monsoon phase, one can imagine the scenario during peak monsoon.

On April 30, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) hired contractors to clean the open drains. Workers in the presence of contractors cleaned the open drains starting from the Bellandur outer ring road till Green Glen layout.

The drains were filled with vegetable peels and other eatables, dumped by people living on both sides of the road, resulting in a foul smell all around. Because of this, drains get clogged and after every rain, garbage and drain water spill over to the roads.

“We were troubled with the foul smell, but thank God, the BBMP cleaned the drains,” said a shopkeeper on the Bellandur outer ring road.

“We are private contractors hired on a daily basis by the BBMP. We have been told to clean up the drains at Bellandur road,” said the contractor.  Apart from the drains, they also cleaned the debris that had got collected on the road.

Low railings in balconies in high-rises unsafe for kids

12 May

The recent incident of 16-year-old Shalini who died after she fell from the second floor balcony of her neighbour’s house in Chamrajpet is still fresh in people’s minds.

As Bangalore has an apartment culture, there are high-rise buildings all over Sarjapur road . There have been several instances of children falling down from apartment balconies.

Nowadays, most apartment buildings have low railings in balconies, which look good but are very unsafe for children. “The balconies designed in apartments are very dangerous for kids.

I have put flower pots near the balcony and have also tied ropes to dry clothes so that my kid does not go near the balcony,” said Pidad D Zousa, a resident of an apartment in Sarjapur.

There have been so many cases reported in newspapers regarding unsafe balconies. “These balconies are only safe if they are covered properly.

A couple of incidents have taken place in this ward. Most of the high-rise buildings have unsafe balconies in Sarjapur. To be on the safer side, I have covered my balconies with grill,”

said Sudhakar Pai, father of an eight-year-old kid and also a member of Residents Welfare Association Forward 150. But then, there are some apartments where modification cannot be done because the builders do not permit it.

Traffic, reduce chaos in Sarjapur-Marathalli road

06 May

The Sarjapur-Marathalli road is one of the busiest places in Bangalore with heavy traffic movement, but it is also one of the best managed area in terms of traffic control.

Huge traffic jams used to occur during peak hours of the day but the effective traffic management by the Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA) has reduced the traffic problem to a considerable extent.

One year has passed and now there are virtually no traffic jams. All due to the ORRCA, who have security guards trained by the Bangalore Traffic Police manning traffic in the area.

You can find security guards manning traffic during peak hours at the Total Mall on Sarjapur Road and other areas like Iblur, Bellandur Gate, Karbisernahalli, Kaikondra-halli and so on.

But the situation was quite different a year ago. “A year ago I had to come every now and then to Sarjapur road because of complaints about traffic.

But after ORRCA took up the task, I hardly get any complaint regarding traffic issues. The traffic condition has improved,” said Praveen Sood, Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic.

Transformer over open drain scares residents

06 May

A transformer situated just above an open drain in Sarjapur road opposite Spencers mall poses a danger to people in the area. Garbage is thrown openly near the transformer and during heavy rain, any mishap can take place.

Pedestrians avoid the footpath as they have to pass the transformer and risk their lives walking on the main road. “Because of the open drain and the transformer, we don’t prefer walking on the footpath.

And after heavy showers when water gets accumulated on the road, it’s risky,” said Nisha, who was walking with her friends down the road towards the bus stop.

The transformer is situated in front of an apartment and an engineering institute, and just next to it, there are heaps of garbage. Near the transformer there is a flower shop and paan shop. Wires hanging from the transformer may cause serious accidents.

People even park vehicles near the transformer, which can be fatal. More tempos can be seen parked rather than cars. “There is no parking space on the other side of the road so I have to park my vehicle here, as my shop is on the other side of the road,

Heavy vehicles slow movement of traffic

28 Apr

Huge trucks carrying construction material in Kaikondrahalli junction creates problems for commuters, especially during peaks hours when these vehicles move around frequently and block the roads.

“During peak hours there is huge traffic and these huge vehicles almost block half of the road,” said Noman, a techie at WIPRO.

As there are no footpaths on the stretch from Sarjapur ring road junction towards Kaikondrahalli, pedestrians face a lot of problem. “It is scary to walk on the road when these trippers move in both directions,

“If we are behind the trippers, the sand sometimes comes to our eyes and it’s difficult to ride bikes,” said a motorist.
